Tragedy struck the popular Florida Powerboat Club’s 25th annual Key West Poker Run on November 9 when Joe Sgro, president of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats in Bristol, Rhode Island, died from injuries following a single-boat crash of a new 50-foot Outerlimits boat.

“Mercury Racing worked closely with Joe over the years in support of his offshore powerboat competition and poker run efforts,” says Rick Mackie, senior marketing manager for the Fond du Lac, WI-headquartered company. “Our most recent collaboration came in June. Joe supported Mercury Marine’s New York, N.Y., media conference by supplying members of the media quick spins down the Hudson River in his record-setting SV43 Outerlimits hull.”

One of Sgro’s greatest achievements came on April 29, 2014 when he and Brian Forehand made back-to-back passes of 179.5 mph and 181.422 mph to set an American Power Boat Association Unlimited Vee-Bottom kilo speed record of 180.47 mph. The record still stands. www.mercuryracing.com, www.outerlimitspowerboats.com, flpowerboat.com
