ALL AT SEA magazine is published by Kennan Holdings LLC (“we,” “us,” “our”). This policy explains what information we collect when you visit allatsea.net, subscribe to our newsletter, enter one of our reader-voted Caribbean Marine Awards contests, or contact us — and how we use it.

We keep this short and plain-spoken because we think you should be able to read it in under five minutes and understand exactly what we do with your information.

Who We Are

Information We Collect

We collect information you give us directly and a small amount of information that’s captured automatically when you use our site.

What you give us:

  • Email address — when you subscribe to our newsletter, enter a reader-voted Awards contest, or contact us.
  • Name — optional on newsletter signups and contest ballots.
  • Island or location — when you vote in an Awards contest and pick your bar’s island.
  • Any message content — if you email us or fill out a contact form.
  • Advertiser contact information — when an advertiser gets in touch with us about placement in the magazine or directory.

What’s captured automatically:

  • Standard web logs — your IP address, browser type, and the pages you visit, via our hosting provider and WordPress. This is typical of any website and is used for security and diagnostics.
  • Google Analytics data — aggregated traffic data such as device type, approximate region, session length. We do not use Google Analytics for advertising; we use it to understand which articles readers find useful.
  • Cookies — small text files that remember your preferences (such as whether you’ve closed a banner, or are logged in as a contributor). You can disable cookies in your browser settings at any time; some site features may not work without them.

How We Use Your Information

  • To send the newsletter you subscribed to (twice-monthly Caribbean cruising news, boating tips, and magazine updates).
  • To run Awards contests — counting your votes, capping submissions at three per email, announcing winners.
  • To respond to your messages when you contact us.
  • To manage advertising relationships with businesses who place ads in the magazine or directory.
  • To keep the site secure and working — diagnosing errors, blocking abusive traffic, measuring performance.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not rent our email list. We do not share individual voter data publicly — the public leaderboard shows aggregate percentages only, never individual voters.

Who We Share Information With

We only share information with service providers that help us run the magazine. Each handles the data on our behalf and under their own privacy terms:

  • Mailchimp (Intuit Inc.) — our newsletter platform. Stores subscriber email, name, and engagement data. Mailchimp privacy policy
  • Google Analytics (Google LLC) — website traffic measurement. Google privacy policy
  • Amazon Web Services — our web hosting provider. AWS privacy notice
  • Gravity Forms and its Mailchimp add-on — the form software running on allatsea.net that routes newsletter signups and contest submissions.

We may also disclose information if required by law — for example, in response to a valid subpoena or court order.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

  • Unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time — every email contains a one-click unsubscribe link.
  • Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct information that’s wrong.
  • Ask us to delete your information.
  • Object to our use of your information.

If you’re in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights under the GDPR, UK GDPR, and the CCPA respectively. The rights listed above cover the substance of what those laws require. If you need more detail on your specific rights, email us.

We only send newsletters to people who actively opt in — either by checking the opt-in box on a contest ballot or subscription form, or by subscribing directly through our site. We use double opt-in: after you submit, Mailchimp sends you a confirmation email, and we only start sending you newsletters after you click that confirmation. Pre-checked consent boxes are never used.

Cookies

We use a small number of cookies for:

  • Site functionality — remembering if you’re logged in as a contributor, remembering if you’ve dismissed a banner.
  • Analytics — Google Analytics cookies to count visits and measure engagement.

We don’t use advertising cookies or third-party trackers beyond Google Analytics. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block all cookies, some parts of the site may not work properly, but reading articles and voting in contests will still work.

Children’s Privacy

ALL AT SEA is a publication for adult sailors, cruisers, and travelers. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA and UK). If you believe a child has submitted information to us, email [email protected] and we’ll delete it.

Data Retention

We keep your information only as long as we need it for the purposes described above:

  • Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe.
  • Contest entries: through the end of the contest year plus one additional year for record-keeping, after which individual voter records are deleted and only aggregate results retained.
  • Advertiser contacts: for the duration of our business relationship plus seven years for accounting and tax purposes.
  • Website logs: typically 90 days, unless longer retention is needed for a specific security investigation.

International Visitors

ALL AT SEA is based in the United States. If you visit from outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to and stored in the U.S. and the other countries where our service providers operate. By using the site, you agree to this transfer.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it last changed. For significant changes, we’ll notify newsletter subscribers by email.
