It’s always Carnival time somewhere in the Caribbean. This lively celebration, rooted in African culture, is a festive multi-day mix of music, dance, food and drink, king and queen and calypso competitions, parades with elaborate costumes and floats, and much more. Each Caribbean island celebrates in its own time and with signature variations on the theme that set this fete apart from its neighbors. Here’s a sampling of 6 Caribbean carnivals not to miss:
March 3-4: Trinidad & Tobago Carnival
French settlers introduced the Fat Tuesday masquerade tradition here in the late 18th century. Hence, this southernmost two-island Caribbean nation’s celebration is the grand-daddy of them all, known as the ‘Greatest Show on Earth.’ Since it happens early in the year, calypsonians and costume makers from other islands will visit to see the year’s hot Carnival trends to carry over to their own festivities. Calypso and steel drums both came from Trinidad & Tobago. The best comes last when the two-day grand-style street parade in Port of Spain culminates the merry-making. ncctt.org
April 26-May 3: St. Thomas Carnival
Queen and Princess pageants, Calypso Monarch competitions, and Pan-O-Rama, from early to mid-April, lead up to the last week of the month, where there are free nightly musical performances in the Carnival Village in Charlotte Amalie. This week also plays host to the Food Fair, where nearly 100 vendors offer Virgin Islands food and drink delicacies, plus Carnival Boat Races in the harbor and two days of Children’s and Adult’s parades with costumed troupes, floupes (troupes with a float), steel pan bands and stilt-walking Mocko Jumbies. www.visitusvi.com/events/st-thomas-carnival/
July 2-9: Vincy Mas
Also known as the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Carnival, the crescendo of fun hits its peak in the last two days, and it is called J’ouvert and Mardi Gras. J’ouvert, meaning ‘daybreak,’ features revelers decked out in colorful paint and powder greet the sunrise with soca and steel pan music. J’ouvert is also a T-shirt Mas, where it’s easy to dress in a creative T, dinghy in, and dance through the streets. July 30-August 5: Barbados Crop Over Carnival
Once a gathering to mark the end of sugar cane season on the island, there are street parties, king and queen pageants, local foods, arts and crafts, art exhibitions, and concerts today. The highlight is the Grand Kadooment Day parade, with masquerade bands and local and visiting merrymakers parading through the streets of St. Michaels from the National Stadium to the Mighty Grynner Highway. July 21-August 11: Anguilla Summer Festival
Boat racing figures prominently in this Carnival-like jubilee, which celebrates 50 years in 2025. It’s no wonder! Boat racing is the national sport of Anguilla. Teams race from scratch, wood-built deckless boats with sandbags for ballast in the 28-foot A Class or 23-foot B Class. Sandy Ground is the epicenter for sailors, while spectators jump in their vehicles for the ‘landrace’ or overlooks around the island where it’s easy to see and cheer for who’s in the lead. The Champion of Champion is named after 6 A and 4 B class races. December 23, 2025-January 3, 2026: St. Kitts Carnival
Also called ‘Sugar Mas,’ this is one of the only Carnival celebrations in the Caribbean held over this already festive time of year. Events include food, music, parties, parades, swimsuits, and road march competitions. Downtown Kingston is the heart of the action.
