Daniel Skutch Tyson Wins 2025 International Optimist Regatta in St. Thomas
Daniel Skutch Tyson of Annapolis Yacht Club wins the 32nd International Optimist Regatta at St. Thomas Yacht Club after 10 races in steady Caribbean trade winds.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Strong starts and consistent boat speed helped USA sailor Daniel Skutch Tyson claim victory at the 2025 International Optimist Regatta (IOR), hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC).
The 13-year-old Annapolis Yacht Club sailor topped a fleet of nearly 90 competitors representing the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, several U.S. states, and Argentina. Over three days of racing in 8-foot Optimist dinghies, sailors competed in steady 10–15 knot trade winds and sunny Caribbean conditions.
“I don’t always have good starts, but I did this week,” says Tyson. “I’m good at handling wind shifts. I was nervous on the final day because I wanted to stay in the lead, so I just focused on my sailing.”
Overall Podium – 2025 IOR Results
After 10 races, the top three overall finishers were:
- Daniel Skutch Tyson (USA) – Annapolis Yacht Club
- Christian Petersen (USA) – Saunderstown Yacht Club
- Maxime McCulloch (USA) – Lakewood Yacht Club
Tyson’s overall victory also secured first place in the 13–15-year-old Red Fleet.
Puerto Rico’s Valeria Perez-Hermida finished third in Red Fleet and earned Top Female Sailor honors, earning her name on the perpetual Founders Trophy.
“This is my fifth IOR, so I know the conditions well,” says Perez-Hermida. “If I don’t do as well in a race as I’d like, I try to learn from it in the next one.”
Fleet Highlights
Blue Fleet (Ages 11–12)
Maxime McCulloch credited the preceding TOTE Clinic for his preparation.
“The clinic helped me understand the winds and waves here and how other sailors compete,” he says.
White Fleet (10 and Under)
Jonah Watson of Florida’s Jensen Beach Race Team won the division and finished fifth overall.
“My strategy was to start on the favored side and stay focused,” he says.
Green Fleet (Beginner Division)
Benjamin Lima of Coral Reef Yacht Club secured first place after 22 races.
“When I felt nervous about staying in first, I repeated my club’s core values — kindness, respect, honesty, love, and peace,” says Lima.

A Week of Optimist Sailing in St. Thomas
The 2025 International Optimist Regatta followed the three-day TOTE Clinic (June 9–11), which featured on-water coaching and a Volvo Ocean-style distance race around the east end of St. Thomas.
Coaching staff included Agustin “Argy” Resano, Manny Resano, Esteban Rocha, Gonzalo Pollitzer, Mykel Alonso, and USVI coaches Megan Cassidy, Spencer LeGrande, Joie Paciulli, and Emily Verdioa.
The week also included the TOTE Team Racing Championship, won by the USA National Team.
