Catch a dolphin (mahi-mahi) over 55-pounds and win $25,000 cash!

This is the top prize in the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club’s 20th Annual Dolphin Derby, sponsored by Budget Car and Truck Rental and set for May 3, 2015.

“A 55-pound dolphin is totally attainable. They have been caught here in our waters, but never in the tournament, says Lori Bailey, club manager.

Up for grabs is a total of over $30,000 in cash and prizes. Cash prizes will be awarded to anglers who catch the 10 largest dolphin by weight. Ties in weight will be broken by length. The Best Boat award will be given to the vessel with the most dolphin by weight, with ties broken by count.

Last year, St. Croix angler, Beth Basinski, fishing aboard the 65’ Hatteras, Living the Dream, caught the largest dolphin, a 35.30-pounder. Meanwhile, the Best Boat award went to St. Thomas’ Emanuel, a 34’ Calypso, with 12 dolphin collectively weighing 238.30-pounds.

Register for the tournament at the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club in Red Hook on Friday May 1, 2015. The fee is $275 for member boats, which includes four anglers and four rods, with $50 for an extra rod. Non-members pay $325 with $60 for an extra rod. The Captain’s Meeting will follow registration.

Fishing begins with lines in the water at 6 a.m. on May 3. All boats must be past ‘P’ dock at IGY American Yacht Harbor Marina by 4 p.m. Weigh-in is held at the marina. The Awards Dinner will take place on Monday May 4, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club, in Red Hook, St. Thomas.

The 20th Annual Dolphin Derby is dedicated to avid angler and club member, Dean Cole.

The Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club appreciates the sponsorship of Budget Car and Truck Rental.
