Pirates, legends and sailboat racing! This West End Yacht Club (WEYC) tradition, launched in 1991, is named after fictional buccaneer Gustav “Ding Dong” Wilmerding, who supposedly made the British Virgin Island of Little Thatch Cay his hideout. “A day of races, start and finish in Soper’s Hole, Tortola,” says Brian Edmund, acting WEYC Commodore. Courses take sailors around islands off Tortola’s north and west coasts. The regatta combines competitive sailing, colorful Caribbean pirate lore and camaraderie that has made it a BVI sailing tradition for more than three decades.
