45th Budget Marine Spice Island Billfish Tournament (BMSIBT) GRAND SLAM
GRENADA 27 – 31st January 2014
The anticipation is building as preparations are finalised for the 45th Spice Island Billfish Tournament – the fourth to be title sponsored by Budget Marine.
Richard McIntyre, BMSIBT chairman, said “45 years of great sportfishing in Grenada could never have been maintained if we had continued to kill all the fish as we used to do back in 1964 when the tournament was founded. As angler’s skills and techniques improved so did
tackle and all these advances resulted in more and more dead fish.” to number of international organisations as well as the Budget Marine Spice Island Billfish Tournament. No
The Chairman further stated, “We in Grenada will always be thankful to Sid Johnson of Trinidad & Tobago (in particular), for having the foresight and vision to see the beneficial effects of BILLFISH CONSERVATION on a country’s fishery resources. It is very heartening to see that we have all taken up the ‘baton’ passed on to us by Sid, since the RELEASE format rules that he relentlessly encouraged us to use have now been adopted by every tournament in the Southern Caribbean. The apparent survival of our Billfish Resource is testimony to his efforts and the Budget Marine Spice Island Billfish Tournament remains forever grateful for this legacy”.
The 2013 tournament was the fourth in a row to attract 50 boats (or more) and 255 anglers attended, re-enforcing its position as the biggest tournament in the Southern Caribbean. A total of 76 billfish were released including a “Grand Slam” by the boat “Gud Tyme” from Trinidad & Tobago who finished 2nd from St Lucia came 3rd overall, “Exile” from Aruba won the event and “Reel Extreme.” The organisers are hopeful of another remarkable turnout in 2014.
To celebrate the landmark 45th event, several new categories have been added to enhance the awards list with some significant prizes including rods & reels and HD video cameras!
Mr. McIntyre expressed his sincere gratitude to all sponsors especially to Budget Marine and the other major sponsors: The Beacon Insurance Co. Ltd, Scotia Bank, Carib Beer, Grenada Board of Tourism, Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina and the Government of Grenada; without whom the event could not continue.
He also thanked the Grenada Yacht Club, long time home of the tournament, for the continued use of their facilities – which has recently been refurbished and have added attractions for visitors to the club – and AllyDay Creative Projects, the events’ marketing representative since 2009.
BMSIBT remains a qualifying tournament in the Offshore World Championship (the winning team in Grenada is invited to fish a tournament of champions in Quepos Costa Rica). It is also the first event in the Southern Caribbean Billfish Circuit (SCBC) which organises the tournaments of Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago (2), Barbados, St Lucia and Martinique into a championship with prizes for the overall winner based on their best 3 scores from the individual tournaments.
Boats can pre-register online at www.sibtgrenada.com – actual registration day is Monday 27th January at the Grenada Yacht Club.
