Cruisers who opted to stay home for Christmas and New Year’s now have the perfect opportunity to kick off the new year on the water. The Salty Dawg Sailing Association (SDSA) is hosting the January Jump Rally, a guided sailing event that takes participants from West Palm Beach, Florida, to Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas’ Berry Islands.
The rally begins with pre-departure sessions in West Palm Beach on January 14, offering participants essential guidance and camaraderie between the bridges. Weather permitting, the fleet will set sail on January 15 for Great Harbour Cay, where an arrival celebration awaits. From there, rally participants can continue exploring the Bahamas, including cruising to Highborne Cay in the Exumas. As of late November, 34 vessels were already registered for this exciting event.
“This rally enables cruisers to stay home for the holidays and still enjoy a warm winter in the Bahamas,” says Bob Osborn, former president of the SDSA, who handed over leadership to Michael Benjamin last fall. “Rally participants can benefit from educational webinars, meet like-minded cruisers, and cross the Gulf Stream with weather advice and the support of experienced shoreside staff. This nearshore/offshore passage provides captains and crew with the chance to gain valuable experience, making it an ideal stepping stone to longer offshore rallies such as the Caribbean Rally in the Fall or the Homeward Bound Rally in the Spring.”
Participants will enjoy a host of benefits, including professional weather routing by Chris Parker of The Marine Weather Center, position tracking, and thorough coordination and support throughout the offshore passage. Upon registering and paying the $200 rally fee, sailors will gain access to a dedicated rally welcome page with comprehensive planning and preparation resources.
The January Jump Rally is the perfect way to combine a love of sailing with the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Bahamas in winter. Don’t miss your chance to join this incredible adventure!
