Carnaval de Martinique

Carnaval de Martinique is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich carnival celebrations in the Caribbean, held annually on the island of Martinique in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday. Centered in the capital city of Fort-de-France, the festival is known for its energetic street parades, elaborate costumes, and strong traditions rooted in the island’s French and Caribbean heritage.

The celebration typically unfolds over several days of themed festivities, including colorful parades, music competitions, street dancing, and costumed revelry. Traditional characters such as the devilish “Diables Rouges,” the playful “Mariages Burlesques,” and the dramatic “Vidés” parades bring a unique theatrical flair to the event, while local bands and percussion groups keep the streets alive with rhythm.

The carnival concludes on Ash Wednesday with the symbolic burning of “King Vaval,” marking the end of the festivities and the beginning of Lent. With its blend of history, music, and creative expression, Carnaval de Martinique is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive carnival celebrations in the Caribbean.
