A New Era for Multihull Racing in the Caribbean
The Caribbean Multihull Challenge (CMC), the only major Caribbean regatta dedicated exclusively to multihulls, is introducing a new dimension to competition for its 8th edition.
Set for January 29 to February 1, 2026, in St. Maarten, the event will now include line honors awards—recognizing the fastest boats over the course, in addition to traditional podium finishes based on CSA ratings.
Speed Takes Center Stage
According to Petro Jonker, the move reflects evolving trends in multihull design and owner preferences.
“Racing to a rating is fun, but racing for flat-out speed is ‘funner,’” Jonker noted, pointing to rapid advancements in hull forms, foils, materials, and sail design. These innovations are enabling modern multihulls to achieve speeds that were unheard of just a few years ago.
Balancing Performance and Fair Competition
The Caribbean Multihull Challenge has traditionally relied on the CSA rating system to determine winners, ensuring competitive balance across a diverse fleet. However, the new format acknowledges that raw speed is a defining characteristic of today’s high-performance multihulls.
For 2026, the regatta will feature:
- CSA-rated results for overall podium finishes
- Line honors awards for the fastest boats on course
This dual approach aims to celebrate both tactical racing and outright performance.
