VIPCA Changes Leadership – Kennon Jones, New Executive Director
VIPCA appoints Kennon Jones as Executive Director, succeeding Staci Smith, who helped expand the organization’s reach and industry impact.
A leadership transition at the Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association marks both a new beginning and a notable farewell.
On June 1, VIPCA welcomed Kennon Jones as its new Executive Director, while recognizing the contributions of outgoing director Staci Smith.
A New Chapter for VIPCA
Based in St. Thomas, VIPCA represents a key voice in the territory’s charter yacht sector.
Jones steps into the role with a focus on:
- Expanding membership
- Enhancing member benefits
- Strengthening marine infrastructure
- Elevating the overall charter experience in the USVI
“With the BVI continuing to increase costs and regulatory burdens, VIPCA will continue highlighting the benefits of the U.S. Virgin Islands as a premier yachting destination,” says Jones.
Experience On and Off the Water
Jones brings a diverse background to the role:
- Four seasons as a term charter captain, primarily aboard the 58’ Lagoon Altesse
- Experience in bareboat and dive operations
- More than 40,000 nautical miles at sea
- USCG Master 100-ton license and PADI instructor certification
Before entering the charter industry, he worked at the U.S. Department of State from 2012 to 2018, focusing on building member-based organizations and stakeholder engagement.
He later completed a double-handed circumnavigation aboard his Tartan 34C Temujin.
Recognizing Staci Smith’s Impact
During her tenure, Smith played a significant role in advancing VIPCA’s presence across the marine industry.
Key achievements include:
- Organizing the 2024 Charter Yacht Show
- Launching the 2025 VIBE Show
- Expanding membership and industry visibility
- Navigating complex USVI–BVI regulatory challenges
Her work helped strengthen communication between industry stakeholders and government agencies.
Smith now joins Paradise Yacht Management as assistant to the CEO.
Continuing Leadership
Melissa Popple remains in her role as Assistant Executive Director, providing continuity during the transition.
