Mocka Jumbies and Rum...

For the first time in many years, weekend sailing was held in Falmouth Harbour from the Antigua Yacht Club on 19th February.

The race was the first of a five race series to be held fortnightly. To encourage more entries a flexible handicap system has been introduced whereby the winners and losers in each race will have their handicaps adjusted before the next race. It is hoped that this will generate closer racing with a less predictable winner.

Rather than use the marks laid off Falmouth Harbour, Fleet Captain, John Duffy, ably assisted Karl James, laid buoys a few hundred yards off the harbour entrance. Two of the channel markers were also part of the course. The race and the legs were intended to be short in an attempt to make the racing more fun. Several competitors commented that you need a degree in algebra in order to understand the course, so numerous were the mark roundings.

Disappointingly, only five boats signed on for the race.

The wind was a reasonable 10 to 15 knots and the course gave the boats every point of sail but, despite several downwind legs, no-one flew a spinnaker.

The leading boat, Seeya, finished in under and hour and a half with the last boat, both on the water and on handicap, Moonshadow, only ten minutes behind. The winner, on handicap was Hans Lammers in his classic yacht, Sunshine.

For the next race Sunshine will receive a ten point increase in her handicap and Moonshadow a ten point reduction.
