2005 has been a banner year for St. Croix Junior sailor
Sydney Jones, aged 15. Considering her first Laser regatta was last October,
she has left lasting positive impressions in the eyes of the sailing world.

Her interest in racing and the
competitive spirit of sailing was not ignited until 2003, when, as an 8th
grade student, she was asked to fill in for a High School 420 Regatta. Even as
the youngest member of the team, the racing came very naturally to her. During
the Summer of 2003, Sydney attended a 420 racing clinic and began racing in the
local one design series. Since then, she has traveled to other islands, other
countries and many states to sail in larger fleet regattas against the best in
the world. She is still one of the youngest in the fleet, (youngest Radial
sailor at 2005 US Nationals) giving her quite an advantage in the near future.

In the Summer of
2004, Sydney bought her first Laser. It is here that she found her passion. She
sails the 4.7, Radial and Standard rigs according to conditions. Sydney sails 6
days a week. Her goal is to be competitive in the top 10% in the Laser Radials
by the age of 17, and qualify for the Olympic Laser Radial Single-handed
Women’s event..

In July, Sydney
and Puerto Rican Junior Sailors, Daisy Cintron and Angela Abela headed to
California for the Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championships . They then flew
directly to Barrington, RI for the 2005 Laser 4.7 Worlds.

Sydney’s main
focus has been on Laser sailing. However, she was recently chosen out of
several hundred applicants to be a participant in the Rolex Next Step Program
which will send her to Annapolis for a weekend of training and mentoring from
the best women keelboat sailors in the world.
