Organizer West Indies Events has announced the schedule and sponsors for the first Grenada Classic Regatta, planned for February 21st through February 24th 2008. The organizers say they anticipate the participation of between 20 to 30 classic yachts, vintage yachts, schooners, wooden boats, and other classics in the first edition of the event in Grenada.

The official Skippers briefing and opening ceremony with cocktail party will take place at the Grenada Yacht Club on Thursday October 18th, 2007 in the late afternoon. On Friday, the start will be out of St. George’s.  Yachts will sail along the Grand Anse Beach coastline and finish back in St. George’s. A lunch buffet and drinks will be offered to all captains, crew, press and VIP’s compliments of Port Louis Grenada. An evening party with a live band will be open to the general public.

Saturday will also see the start out of St. George’s. The yachts will sail along the southern coast to St. David’s, where they will finish in St. David’s Harbour. A buffet lunch dinner will be offered to participants, press and invited VIP guests at the Water’s Edge Restaurant, compliments of Bel Air Plantation. A beach party for all starting around 7.00 pm with a live band is also scheduled.

On Sunday the yachts will leave St. David’s Harbour and sail back to St. George’s. The yachts will sail into the harbour in a parade and return to the docks. West Indies Events is looking into the possibilities to organize a local boat race for the small workboats in the afternoon.

An award giving ceremony and cocktail party will be held in the late afternoon followed by the final closing party at Port Louis Marina.

West Indies Events announced in October that several sponsors have confirmed participation. An official sponsor agreement signing was held at the Victory Bar, Port Louis Grenada, a maritime village and marina currently under development in St. George’s, Grenada.

Port Louis Chairman Peter de Savary said, "I can imagine parents bringing their children out to see these wonderful vessels and reminiscing about the past. These classic yachts sailed our waters years ago and I know that most Grenadians have not seen these kinds of yachts for many years.”

Port Louis Grenada has contributed sponsorship for other island events recently including the Grenada Round the Island Easter Regatta, Grenada Billfish Tournament, and the Port Louis Grenada Sailing Festival 2008. “These sponsorships not only demonstrate our commitment to the development of sports, but our commitment to promoting Grenada as an event destination," said de Savary.

Port Louis Grenada and Bel Air Plantation have signed on as Silver Sponsors.
Additional sponsors include Shipwrights Ltd. and the Maritime School of the West Indies. Bel Air Plantation is a relatively new boutique resort located at St. David’s Harbour, Grenada, constructed in traditional Caribbean style with individual villa and cottage accommodations.

Shipwrights Ltd., also located on St. David’s Harbour, specializes in the restoration and refit of classic yachts. Fred Thomas, owner of Shipwrights Ltd., has partnered with West Indies Events in the development and operation of the Grenada Classic Regatta.

The Maritime School of the West Indies is an IYT Fort Lauderdale partnership school in St.Maarten specialized in courses for mega yacht crew and captains which will open a school in 2008 in Grenada.
