On a perfect day for sailing Rushin’ Rowlette, skippered by Kevin Rowlette, won the 2011 Governor’s Cup in Racing Class. Cruising Class was won by Shamrock VII, skippered by Tom Mullen.
This was the first Governor’s Cup to be sponsored by His Excellency Boyd McCleary, and both he and his wife Jenny joined the racing on board Sue-Ellyn Eldridge’s yacht Luxury Girl.
The yachts in racing class had two races. The first race took them from the start in Road Harbour to Brandywine Bay, then a downwind leg to Nanny Cay, before finishing back in Road Harbour. The course was altered for the second race owing to a wind shift, requiring two laps between Brandywine Bay and Road Harbour.
The Cruising Class had a single race, which took them around several islands including Dead Man’s Chest, before finishing in Road Harbour. It was also pleasing to find the Cruising Class supported by visiting yachtsman and sailors. The Royal BVI Yacht Club is very keen to build an increased involvement in the Cruising Class from all comers, so there are several fun races for cruisers and families on this year’s sailing calendar.
The result in Racing Class was as close as possible; Pipe Dream won race 1 and came second in race 2, with Rushin’ Rowlette achieving second and first respectively. The rules of racing state that in the event of a tie (both boats scored three points) the winner shall be the boat with the best result in the last race. Rushin’ Rowlette therefore took the honours!
