Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba

If ever a sailing community suffered because of politics it would have to be that of Cuba. Despite the ongoing US embargo, the Hemingway International Yacht Club (HIYC) continues to offer the hand of friendship to cruisers, racers and sports fishermen.

On May 21st the club will celebrate its 20th Anniversary and to mark the occasion they have organized a string of sailing events and workshops beginning April 26th when the subject will be ‘80 Years of Nautical Relations USA – Cuba, Present and Perspectives’. Other discussions will look at nautical recreation in Cuba, present and future (May 19th), and climate change and the effect it is having on the migration of the billfish species. The latter, on May 28th, will also include a presentation on circle hooks and tagging research and is timed to coincide with the start of the 62nd Ernest Hemingway International Billfish Tournament.

Anyone visiting Cuba during the celebrations are cordially invited to the HIYC on May 21st at 20:00 when Commodore Escrich says “the club and its club members will dress to receive, with great pleasure, all friends and members of the international sailing community.”
