Cancun, located on the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, has long been a world-renown tourist destination. Yachtsmen too have discovered the charms of this Western Caribbean city along with its neighboring resort area known as the Riviera Maya.

Looking for a Marina in Cancun Mexico?

Now, yachts up to 180-feet with a depth of 12-feet have a safe place to call home in Mexico. In October 2012, Island Global Yachting (IGY) welcomed the 176-slip La Amada Marina to its international network of marinas. La Amada is the only concrete-built mega-yacht specific safe dockage in the nearby vicinity. It’s an ideal on-route stop for those planning to transit the Panama Canal. It’s a great base in which to explore the area by land and by sea.

“By land, we’re 10 minutes from Cancun and 25 minutes from the Cancun International Airport. In other words, far enough to be out of the hassle of everyday life but close enough to enjoy it,” says La Amada Marina general manager, Martin Plas. “By sea, we’re as close to the sports fishing grounds as Isla Mujeres, but we are land-based.”

Cancun’s fertile fishing grounds, celebrated white sand beaches and spectacular dive sites are only a few of the reasons why both Orbitz and Expedia ranked the city and its environs as a number one travel destination in 2012.

“Must-see attractions and activities in the area include the Mayan ruins, sports fishing, adventure tours and Cancun’s nightlife,” Plas recommends.

The Mayans lived on the Yucatan Peninsula for over 3,000 years. Travel 117 miles west of Cancun to see the architectural wonders at Chichen Itza, a World Heritage Site that was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The historic walled city of Tulum, one of the most popular Mayan ruins and located 82 miles south of Cancun, sits on a dramatic cliff facing the Caribbean Sea. Only 19 miles away from Cancun is the Xcaret archaeological theme park. Here, there is everything from a coral reef aquarium, butterfly pavilion and Mayan Village to a nightly show where over 300 costumed actors portray the history of Mexico from pre-Hispanic times to present through song and dance.

Fishing in Cancun

Marlin Magazine named the Yucatan peninsula as one of the Top 20 Billfishing Destinations in the world. Blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish are plentiful in the seas near Cancun. June is the month to catch blues, May for whites and March to June for sails. There are a number of charter operators in the area.

Adventure tours abound. These include zip-line rides, ATV jungle exploration, spelunking and swimming in underground caves, whale shark snorkeling, submarine cruising and much more.

Nightlife and Restaurants in Cancun

Nightclubs, bars, lounges and live music in many venues keep visitors entertained at night. By day, marina guests enjoy special discounts at the adjacent full-service, 35,00-square foot Beloved Spa in the Beloved Hotel, which is part of the Excellence Group, and the 18-hole, par-72, Greg Norman-designed Playa Mujeres Golf Course.

Cancun also offers delicious dining options.

“Ten minutes away IGY’s La Amada Marina in downtown Cancun there are several very good restaurants serving international cuisine such as French, Italian, Japanese, Argentinean and Cuban as well as local Mexican cuisine,” says IGY’s Plas. “A wide range of internationally-branded restaurant chains are present as well.”

Back home, La Amada Marina provides a secure and tranquil environment. The Marina is part of the 214-unit beachfront condominiums of La Amada Residences. Slip-side, concrete docks are equipped with high-voltage power options (110, 240 and 480 volts). There’s Cable TV and Wi-Fi, high-speed diesel fueling, bathrooms and showers, a captain’s lounge, laundry storage, yacht provisioning and storage rooms available.

For Crew

Crews will find the services of a marina concierge, self-service laundry and dry-cleaning pick-ups, online provisioning or the opportunity for a provisioning representative to come to the vessel, many parts and service providers and repairs by appointment by recognized certified agents or local engineers on site. For play, the marina hosts BBQ get-togethers for crews as well as new events this year such as promotional parties, sailing regattas and fishing tournaments.

“Cancun is one of the safer areas in Mexico,” says IGY’s Plas. “The marina is located in a dead-end area (no thru-ways to other major areas) surrounded by a few high-end well-secured hotels and golf course. The compound has several security gates at the entrance to the marina and the marina has its own security access control as well as patrolling officers. No major crime incidents have been reported in this near area.”
