Life as an International Pro Kitesurfer

Kitesurfing, kiteboarding, kiting… you can call it either of those names, and that’s what I do!  My name is Julie Jaubert-Simsar, pro kitesurfer, French, 25 and I have been living in San Juan, Puerto Rico for three and a half years.  I grew up doing land and watersports, and after windsurfing, kitesurfing was the continuation of my addiction to the water.  The difference with that sport is that I started doing it everyday, got good at it, one thing led to another, and I was sponsored.  I started in Cabarete in the Dominican Republic in 2002, and have not stopped since.  My husband, Antoine Jaubert, owns a kite school and shop: www.kitesurfpr.com.

Kiteboarding is the fastest growing water sports; it brings together popular water sports such as surfing, wakeboarding and windsurfing.  20 meters high jumps, crazy loops, a huge sail ranging from seven to 15 square meters… bring together a huge crowd.  Flying has always been man’s dream, anyways!

Being a professional kitesurfer means traveling around the world for competitions, reportages, and photoshoots.  My sponsors—Liquid Force, Misultin Zone, Ozone Travel, and Smith Optics—support me in all of my trips.  People say that we live “in our boardbags” because we often go from one destination to another without stopping home; we’ll be on the road for several months at a time… and I really love it.  I am very grateful for being able to travel and meet different cultures each time!

Last year, I mostly focused on competitions, followed the world tour called KPWT (Kiteboard Pro World Tour), and joyfully finished second in the world.   Most of my training throughout the year was in Puerto Rico, but I also took a few trips meeting friends in all part of the world.  I spent a few weeks in Brazil while waiting for our rainy fall season to pass through and I also met up, during the summer, with my parents who live in Turkey.

During the season, competitions took me to a lot of different countries, such as Venezuela, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Morocco, France and finally New-Caledonia.  I would spend one to two weeks most of the time discovering new cultures, habits, customs… and also learning how to get around the country!  One of my longest trips took 51 hours from door to door: it was going from San Juan to a Greek island called Paros!

2007 is a year focused on trips and a few competitions.  I have already started with a trip to Maui, and I am hoping on touring the south-east coast of France during the summer.  You can keep in touch with my trips and competitions on my website: www.juliesimsar.com.
