For Alex Schaerer, owner of the 69ft IRC Racing yacht, Caol Ila R, Les Voiles de St Barth was an exhilarating experience, winning all but one race in the maxi class and finishing as the overall top boat in the fifth anniversary edition of this locally-organized event. Principal event sponsor, watchmaker Richard Mille, presented Schaerer with a Richard Mille RM028 special edition ‘Les Voiles de St. Barth’ timepiece, one of a numbered and limited edition of 100 pieces.

Event organizer François Tolède said, “This has been another great edition, another success. I am really pleased with the level of competition and camaraderie among all competitors and partners. The professionalism both on the water and onshore has been amazing. Thanks to all our teams, Les Voiles de St Barth is now running smoothly, while still maintaining welcoming scale for all to enjoy.” With 68 boats, Les Voiles had its largest fleet yet.

Another maxi yacht, Bella Mente, ran into problems with the high winds over the weekend snapping her carbon fiber mast on Friday, taking the boat out of the competition. And Sint Maarten-based sailor Frits Bus also lost his mast, in a repeat of the same problem as last year, robbing his Island Water World sponsored Melges 24 of a podium place.

The prize giving was held dockside in the Les Voiles de St. Barth race village, on the Quai General de Gaulle in Gustavia Harbor. Race organizers presented the top three finishers in each class with trophies, champagne and other prizes. Competitors and guests were treated to a spectacular fireworks display over Gustavia Harbor, accompanied by the live music of Joyful Noise.
