Every year in March, some of the world’s most talented sailors flock to the Caribbean island of St. Maarten for the annual St. Maarten Heineken Regatta which offers a unique combination of world class sailing, performances by international artists and great parties. Among these sailors is a Heineken Ladies Team that sets their sails under the name Something Hot. Inspired by the name of Mr. Freddie Heineken’s yacht, Something Cool, the Something Hot team has been taking part in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta since 1997.
These ladies, working for Heineken in different countries such as the Netherlands and the Republic of Panama, have brought home a number of prizes over the last years. In 2008 the team won the award for “Most Fun” team and in 2009 the team ended in the 2nd place in the same category. Last year the team, led by Marieke Poulie, fought off tough competition and ended first in their sailing category! “This was Serious Fun; a great team, a fantastic event and an exciting race! We left quite some men shivering at sea …..” says one of the ladies Hélène Weesie.
During their stay on St. Maarten, Something Hot dedicates part of their time to one of the many foundations on the island. In 2009 and 2010 the ladies supported The Safe Haven Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that offers shelter, counseling and supportive services to victims of Domestic Violence. The ladies have gone around and asked fellow female and male sailors to donate to this cause. Safe Haven President Oldine Bryson-Pantophlet has said in previous years to be very thankful for the funds received by the shelter.
This year Something Hot will be back to defend last years’ championship title. Don’t hesitate to go up to them to ask about the foundation they will be supporting this year and to donate. The ladies are to be recognized by their matching outfits, an ice cold Heineken in their hand and you will most probably find them on the dance floor!
