Following Hurricane Ivan’s passage over Grenada, the options
open to boat owners and insurance companies for repair work were a much-debated
topic. Some liveaboard cruisers opted for Trinidad, others headed North. 18
boats were shipped to the UK by Seven Stars, others remained in Grenada.
Grenada’s existing resources could not meet the demand and additional help was
brought in.

Goodacre Yacht
Services, a yacht repair company based in Port Solent, UK came out to Grenada
in October to assess the feasibility of sending out a repair team and working
with local yards to undertake some of the more complex repairs.

The team would be
based at Spice Island Marine, with Island Dreams undertaking Project and Client
Support – from buying fans, to clearing parts through customs, organizing work
permits and cleaning boats following repair work.

Goodacre
specialize in hull repairs and shipwright carpentry, so Turbulence took on all
the rigging and canvas and Spice Island Marine provided facilities in the yard
and undertook Awlgrip painting

The first boat to
be fixed by GYS went on to compete at Tobago Race Week
in early May. Owner Paul Dale said: “2nd in Class overall, with a big
silver cup… the boat went faultlessly for the whole holiday. To arrive in
Spice Island Marine to find that not only all the structural work had been
completed, ahead of schedule; but the boat had been thoroughly valeted, to the
point where even the Grenadian courtesy flag had been laundered and neatly
folded on the chart table, was beyond my wildest expectations!”

The team has been
based at Spice Island Marine for what has been a very successful seven-month
stay. A total of eight boats have been repaired and Managing Director, Barry
Goodacre, has been very pleased with the performance of his team and the way
the project has progressed.

“Spice Island
Marine have gone out of their way to accommodate us and we have been very
impressed with the quality of their work – especially Awlgrip Painting. We have
worked in other locations – St Martin, Thailand, Lanzarote – but this has been
our longest overseas project. It is not easy on our staff as they spend long
periods away from home, but we work hard to fit in with their plans and adjust
the schedule accordingly. Amongst the team we have had a birth, a wedding, a
house sale and exams to take into account.

Friendships have
been forged and without wishing another hurricane on Grenada – we hope to be
back!”
