Chief Minister’s Youth Regatta

The 5th annual Chief Ministers Youth Regatta was sailed
July 9th & 10th in ideal conditions just off the entrance to
Nanny Cay Marina. Seven teams from around the Carribean competed in some of the
best junior competition seen in years. Tortola had two KATS teams
representing their country, St. Thomas and St. Croix represented the USVI, and
teams from down island included Antigua, St. Lucia, and Bequia.

In the final
standings, St. Thomas was the overall winner in the IC24 and Laser 4.7
races. The first day was split into two sessions having IC24 racing in the
morning followed by Lasers in the afternoon.

Not enough can be
said about the quality of the young sailors, with only one minor incident on
the course. The point spread after the first day looked like Team Antigua may
have been on course to upset last year’s champion St. Thomas after the morning
racing on Saturday, but the tide was turned by the rest of the fleet on Sunday
when St. Thomas pretty much dominated the racing but was heavily pressured by
St. Croix, St Lucia, and the Team Tortola Bullets.

After having a bad
day of sailing on Saturday, Team Tortola Bullets, reorganized itself
and came out on Sunday firing on all cylinders, surprising the other teams
and stepping the regatta to a new level of competition. Captain Jamar Cooper of
the Team Tortola Bullets did a great job of pulling his team together. The
Laser racing did not count in the point scoring this year, but rumor has it
that it may factor in on the point totals next year.

The KATS program (
Kids And The Sea ) is celebrating its 15th year of teaching the youth
of the BVI many aspects of swimming, rowing, sailing, scuba diving. Added next
year will be windsurfing. KATS is an all-volunteer organization supported
financially through donations by generous businesses and individuals in
the BVI’s.
