Weymouth, England was the host for the 2006 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships July 12 to 21. Many refer to this as the “practice run” for the 2012 Olympic sailing events to be hosted here. Many also believe that some of these very sailors that participated in these games will also be there in 2012, sailing on now familiar waters to seek once again the medals in the names of their nations.

This year’s Youth World Championships saw record-breaking numbers, with 63 Nations sending 350 of the world’s best young sailors. The world of sailing also felt the warm breeze of talent coming from the Caribbean, as six of those Nations sent 14 of their best to compete. Many of the Caribbean sailors traveled to England on their own, while Bermuda, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico sent teams. Kai Chaplin (BAH), and Gregory Douglas (BAR) were sole representatives of their respective Caribbean nations.

The Caribbean sailors not only impressed the world’s fleet of young talent, they also made friends and formed relationships that will last forever, international friendships that they will carry with them as they continue their sailing careers. In fact, Angela Albela (PUR) and Cy Thompson (ISV) leave Great Britain and fly directly to Cartagena, Colombia for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, where they are both favored to do quite well. Taylor Canfield and Nate Rosenberg are planning to compete in the North American 420 Championships and the Team Racing World Championships. Sydney Jones will fly directly to the US Sailing Jr. Women’s Single Handed Championships in Houston, TX and then on to the Laser Radial World Championships in Marina Del Rey, CA. Gregory Douglas (BAR) will return to school and plans on competing on the European Laser Circuit next spring. Marco Teixidor (PUR) will head of to Georgetown University in Washington DC to study Business, Many at Georgetown hope that he will fill the slot that Olympic Hopeful Andrew Campbell left open upon graduating this past spring. Many of the Caribbean competitors are still young enough to compete in next year’s World Championships in Canada…in pursuit of a World Championship medal…full of Caribbean Pride!!!!
