Congratulations are certainly underway for BVI Optimist champion Alec Anderson and four U.S. Virgin Islands sailing mates, Ian Barrows, Billy Gibbons, Alec Taylor and Alex Coyle, who recently took a one-week clinic in Lima Peru in order to tune up for         the Worlds International Championships in Uruguay, South America.   Alec, who is on a true winning streak, placed ninth in a field of 280 boats at the U.S. Nationals in Sarasota, Florida earlier and states that his personal goal is to represent the BVI in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

A champion wind surfer and surfer, Alec hails from a sailing and water family.  His father, Ewan Anderson of Peg Legs Landing in Nanny Cay Marina, is a champion windsurfer and sailor; his grandmother Annie Gardner is an excellent sailor also and has taught swimming on Tortola for years; his grandfather is Mick Gardner, of White Squall II and the William Thornton “Willy T” Restaurant, and his uncle is Morgan Avery, the Original IC24 builder and owner of Avery Boatyard in St. Thomas where his son, Alec’s cousin, teams for the Americas Cup.

Also we congratulate Colin Rathbone who won his first Royal BVI Yacht Club Match Racing Championship during the heavy competition for the annual Pete Sheales Memorial Trophy, beating Kevin Wrigley, 3-2.

BVI OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

Recently officials from the International Olympic Committee and Pan American Sports Organization visited with the BVI Olympic Committee and its individual national federations concerning funding to further develop programs and BVI athletes for international competitions. Carolina Bayon, the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity section manager for the Americas, and David Peterkin, PASO’s treasurer, met with BVI officials seeking support for the BVI Olympic Committee in improving its management and administration.

Peterkin said the Pan American Sports Organization, as the continental body, receives the funds for distribution once the projects have been submitted and approved by Olympic Solidarity. PASO also provides smaller grants to regional Olympic committees, which the BVI would certainly like to qualify for and receive.  Fortunately, there is excellent cooperation between the BVI Olympic Committee and the BVI government.  One of the duo’s undertakings while in the BVI was to educate the BVIOC and the federations about the programs available, so that they would not have to rely on government funding.  We, in the BVI, are very proud of our Olympic Committee and the thousands of hours put in by John Lewis and his many co-workers.

NEW YEARS EVE WILL BE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER IN THE BVI

Things are really hopping during the holiday season this year.  Big parties are planned at all types of places.  Naturally, Foxy’s, The Jolly Roger, Peg Legs Landing, and Bomba’s will be jamming, as well as all of the larger restaurants and hotels—but Jeremy Wright tells me that this year at the 4th year Trellis Bay Celebration they have created a major International BVI Event.  Unique in the BVI, their business association has started a great annual event for all with fireworks, Entertainment, bands, bay decoration, clean toilet facilities and security and, of course, the great fireball designed by artist Aragorn Dick-Reid.  They even have a Fire Brigade.  To help make the evening a true community participation event, local business will be acting as sponsors.  Trellis Bay has moorings for the sailing community, an airport for international commuters and a road from Road Town so access is easy.

We at All At Sea wish all sailors and visitors to our islands a safe and Happy New Year with best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2007.
