BOAT TOOL KIT – TOOLS AND SPARE PARTS

After your boat is up and running, do yourself a favor and put together a tool bag, including spare parts specific to your boat and engine, and leave the bag on the boat, just in case. You’d be surprised how many people are stranded on the water because they didn’t have the tools or parts to perform minor repairs.

At a minimum, your on-board boat tool kit should contain:

  • Owner’s manuals for the boat and engine
  • A high-quality flashlight and spare batteries
  • A spare propeller and prop hardware (prop nut, cotter pin, thrust washers)
  • A propeller wrench and a six-inch long piece of a 2”x4” wood
  • A spark plug wrench and extra spark plugs
  • An assortment of fuses for the boat and the engine
  • A screwdriver with interchangeable bits or an assortment of screwdrivers
  • A mid-size adjustable wrench
  • An assortment of tie straps
  • Epoxy putty (marine grade that cures underwater)
  • Roll of paper towels or shop rags
  • Electrician’s tape (black)
  • Light bulbs (boat-specific)
  • Penetrating oil (WD-40 or similar)
  • Hoses and hose clamps
  • A folding multi-tool
  • Extra engine oil
  • Duct tape
  • Locking pliers
  • A utility knife
  • Fuel filters
  • Belts

Seems like a lot of stuff, but your tool/parts kit might come in handy when you least expect it. You can buy ready-made boat tool kits, but you’ll have to gather the spare parts for your particular boat/engine setup.

Familiarize yourself with fuse and filter locations, and practice changing the propeller on dry land, just so you know the procedure.
