Don’t miss a chance to join the Trinis who take a week off every year to head for nearby Tobago.  Sail Week there is a regatta sandwich—four days of competition with Wednesday’s Lay Day in the middle—that wraps up the spring Caribbean season in “the spirit of racing.”

Sail Week-style partying actually kicked off back in February, when Maritime Management, the Trinidad & Tobago Sailing Association, and Regatta Promoters (host company for the Angostura Tobago Sail week) held a “Wet Run” for the event with drinks, music and dancing—and something called “tequila salt prunes,” which were a big hit, according to Kelly Ann Smith, who took over as regatta manager from Betty Davidson who is off traveling the world.  Smith was well into the spirit of things at the Wet Run.

“After the Maritime Management race that day, crew from all boats poured unto land to the smells of roasted meats, such as pork, lamb, sausages, fish all cooked to perfection.
We mixed batches of rum punch with freshly grated nutmeg, lots of Angostura, Fernandes Black label rum and other Caribbean flavors, a special mix that only a few of us knew and will continue to keep secret for our Tobago regatta.  We couldn’t make enough,” says Smith.

As All at Sea went to press in late March, it was too soon to know how many boats will participate or whether last year’s winners will be back.  The event typically sees yachts from Barbados, Antigua, the US, UK, France, and of course, T&T.  New this year will be two Sunfast 37 charter boats from Guadeloupe, Smith says.  Also new are sponsors Cuevo Tequila (hence those salt prunes?), Johnsonville sausages, and Dasani Water, plus a promise of even more entertainment.

Last year Angostura Tobago Sail Week marked its 25th anniversary.  Sailors can look forward to the start of the next 25 years that honor traditions of serious racing and plenty of fun at one of the Caribbean’s friendliest regattas.  www.sailweek.com
