Talk about a fun weekend – the West End Yacht Club
successfully pulled off another winner in changing this annual event with a
Pirate’s Costume Conflux and Cotillion proceeding the day of racing.
Always held on the first weekend in December, gaily dressed pirates and mates
met for a fun night of costuming, dancing and mild partying at the Jolly Roger
Restaurant and Bar in West End, Tortola. Attendance was large and almost
everyone was dressed in costume for the event. Race Captain Paul Watson handed
out prizes for the highly competitive event while new commodore, Martin van
Houten, solicited entries. Not even the rain dampened
spirits as captains and crews danced to the sounds of rhythm and blues by
Cruise Control.
On Sunday
morning, the sun was out as three classes of racers assembled for the event
which consisted of two races – Revenue Cutters/Racing Class; Pirates/Cruising
Class and a One Design Class for IC- 24s. The courses consisted of using the islands
of West End BVI as marks with a start and finish in front of the Jolly Roger. A
delicious soup cook-off was held during the event, for those on shore, with
proceeds going to benefit VISAR, who had held their Market Day the day before,
with sailors Nels & Linda Hagenson
winning for everyone’s favorite mushroom soup.

Racing Class
1st – Mistress Quickly, who won best overall,
2nd – Invictus,
3rd – Canuckle Heads.
Cruising Class
1st – Ruffian,
who also took “Best Around the Course” honors, 2nd
– Song Line, who also won for
“Best First Race” and 3rd –
My Destiny.
In the IC-24 Class the winners were Black Pearl,
Fiona and Kat’s Kids
respectively.
