BOAT SHOW SCHEDULE – Errol Flynn Marina will be exhibiting at the world’s two largest boat shows: The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and the Miami International Boat Show. The Fort Lauderdale event will be held at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center and the Broward County Convention Center from Thursday, October 29 to Monday, Nov. 2. The Miami Show is at the Miami Beach Convention Center Feb. 11 to 15, 2010. These shows are a major marketing tool for the marina and afford us an opportunity to both meet with past visitors and encourage new visitors to our facility.
MARLIN TOURNAMENT SET SEPT.26-OCT.3 – The 46th Annual International Marlin Tournament, sponsored by the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association Limited will be held at the Port Antonio Marina (Old Marina) starting Saturday, Sept. 26th. THANKS TO OUR UNOFFICIAL ‘AMBASSADORS’ – Like most businesses in these times of economic hardship, we have to look to less costly, but effective, means of promoting our marina. This is where our Unofficial Ambassador Programme comes in. When each yacht visitor is ready to depart Port Antonio, we always ask if they have been pleased with their visit and if they have any suggestions for improving our service. In most cases we seem to be getting a consistent “A-Plus” rating. We then ask the visitor to become an Unofficial Ambassador for Jamaica and to take a few brochures to pass along at future ports of call. On the flip side, we also ask arriving visitors how they learned about Errol Flynn Marina and are learning more and more of them found us as the result of personal recommendations from a past visitor.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? FLYNN IS ‘IN’ AGAIN – After plundering some $3 Billion (US$) at box offices throughout the world, the success of “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy indicates that sword wielding adventurers have retained our interest. While the name “action hero” may have replaced swashbuckler as their title and the weapons may vary, these modern day characters are little more than reincarnations of our marina’s namesake, Errol Flynn. According to a June 21 article in the Washington Post, “no actor in film history has so successfully played a swashbuckler, like Errol Flynn,” quoting Thomas McNulty, author of “Errol Flynn,: The Life and Career.” McNulty claims there is now a “Flynnaissance” underway with the release by Warner Brothers of several DVD boxed sets of his films and more are to come. June also marked the 100th anniversary of Flynn’s birth and October will be the 50th year since his death in 1959. While Johnny Depp may have created a remarkable character with Jack Sparrow, McNulty notes, but Jack Sparrow is far removed from Errol Flynn’s Captain Blood. Olivia deHavilland, one of Flynn’s frequent leading ladies vividly recalls gasping to Flynn in Robin Hood “You speak treason!” Flynn quips simply “Fluently, ” typical of Flynn’s character and personality, too.
“…AND ALL THAT JAZZ TOO!” – Our very first “Jazz Nite on the Pier” went off without a hitch Wednesday, June 17, with a stellar list of both International and Jamaican performers. Co-sponsored by the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival and Errol Flynn Marina in conjunction with the Custos of Portland and the Portland Magistrates Association, the event benefited the survivors of a horrendous truck crash which claimed numerous lives along the nearby Rio Grande Valley. This is the first in a series of concert events being planned on the pier. The Magistrates Association will administer the distribution of the funds collected.
WE LET “GEORGE DO IT:” – Our personable combination Dockmaster-Operations Officer, George Munro, has just returned from an Organization of American States (OAS) workshop for harbour security officers held in Castries, St. Lucia. The three-day workshop focused on critical security matters relative to port operations and includes our cruise ship terminal which also is operated by marina management.
“YO, HO, HO, AND A… Join us for our manager’s weekly rum punch party at the Pool Bar which moves to Monday night starting June 29.. Rum punch costs a whopping $US 1.00 or $100 Jamaican. We also usually have a book exchange. Just bring a few paperbacks and exchange them for some new titles. Our guests find the weekly event an excellent opportunity to swap information on future ports, etc. and make new friends at the same time. We will also be having a jazz and blue jam every Monday starting June 29.
WE TOOK THE “PERFECT MARINA” TEST – The May issue of Dockwalk Magazine for yacht crews contained a crew checklist of must-haves for the perfect marina. We’re pleased to tell you we pretty much ranked 100 per cent in all categories. The check list read: 1. Accessible to the sea. 2. Adjacent to Town. 3. On-Site Customs and Immigration. 4. Free from Surge. 5. Well Laid Out. 6. Free Wi-Fi for All. 7. Exercise Options. 8. Friendly Locals. 9. Fabulous Flowers and Provisions. 10. Affordable Grub and Beer. 11. Something Extra. As for Number 9; we are soon to add a gourmet provisioning service.
“HAVE A YEN FOR THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS?” – There’s an excellent opportunity for the right entrepreneur right in the heart of the marina. It’s our 92 seat restaurant, fully furnished (really turnkey!) and available almost immediately. Fully decorated and having one of the best equipped kitchen’s in the Caribbean, it offers a breathtaking view of both Port Antonio’s West Harbour, the Blue and John Crow Mountains. For details contact the marina by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) . We will reply promptly with complete photos and details. Proposals are now being considered to lease both the Pool Bar and also the combination Delicatessen/Gourmet Shop.
‘ROUND THE WORLD CLIPPER RACE DUE BACK – For the third time, Errol Flynn Marina will play host to the Around the World Clipper Race in May 2010. Likely dates are the May 15-20 period. Errol Flynn hosted the group in 2008 and 2006. Port Antonio will be on the race leg from Panama. From Port Antonio, the racers head for New York and then for Liverpool.
‘SWASHBUCKLER’, WHAT DOES IT MEAN? – “A flamboyant swordsman or adventurer-“ It is alluded that the “swash” comes from the sound of the sword as it pierces the air. We hope this little tidbit means there will be one less mystery in your life today!
