Once again Grenada will be the place to be in the first week of February to kick off the 2013 Caribbean Regatta Season – with the island’s famous mix of great tune-up racing for an International keelboat fleet, and the must-see experience of traditional local work boat racing.

2013 will see some changes and new plans. The Grenada Sailing Festival Board, after much consideration and discussion, has made the decision to suspend its Keelboat Racing Series for the year and concentrate its manpower and resources on the traditional Work Boat Regatta, to make it an even bigger part of the Island’s Independence celebrations and a major high profile National Sailing and Cultural event. The 20th Grenada Sailing Festival Work Boat Regatta will be staged on Grand Anse Beach from Friday to Sunday 1 – 3 February and will provide two days of the most spectacular and competitive racing in wooden, bamboo rigged boats, between the island’s traditional fishing communities of Grand Mal, Gouyave, Sauteurs, Woburn and sister islands Carriacou and Petit Martinique. The event attracts an overall audience of several thousand over the week-end – locals and visitors alike – who enjoy a beach festival mixing racing, culture, entertainment, food and fun, with an excellent balance between serious sailing and the vibrancy of Grenada’s lifestyle. For updates and information keep a check on the Festival’s website: www.grenadasailingfestival.com and its Facebook page – Grenada Sailing Festival.

The good news is there will still be a competitive keel boat regatta held 1-5 February 2013. This event will have a new identity, the Grenada Sailing Week, with race courses making the most of the great sailing conditions around the western and southern coast of Grenada.

The website www.grenadasailingweek.com  will be established shortly as will a facebook page – Grenada Sailing Week, so keep checking regularly. You should also sign up to their mailing list by following this link http://eepurl.com/prCqn to stay up to date with all information as it becomes available. You can always e-mail at info@grenadasailingweek.com with any specific requests.

The Grenada Sailing Festival Board fully endorses this new initiative and is confident that Grenada’s unique blend of International and traditional events will remain an important part of the sailing calendar.
