Calm seas and clear skies made great fish-catching conditions for the 5th annual Guys vs Gals “Reel” Challenge, hosted September 25 to 26, by the Golden Hook Fishing Club on St. Croix.
When it came down to the wire in this Guys vs Gals “reel” battle of the sexes, the gals won by catching a total of 22 wahoo, which weighed in at a
whopping 419.6 pounds. The Guys caught 21 wahoo for a total weight of only 246 pounds.
This marks the third year in five that the gals have won the event.
“Some of the fishermen went out to the northeast corner of the bank the day before the tournament and fishing was slow,” explained Kathy Mackay, a member of the tournament committee. “So the first day of fishing, when it was the guys turn, everyone headed out to the south shore. The second day, when it was the gals turn, captains like Andy Anderson on Beloved used his conventional wisdom, went back out to the bank, really worked it and did a good job of catching the wahoo.”
Anderson’s Beloved scored the Best Boat prize for the day the gals fished as well as Best Boat Overall with a catch of 7 wahoo weighing 166.6 pounds. Lady anglers fishing aboard included Pam Cross and Anderson’s wife, Chris.
“Chris is the regular mate on Beloved. She rigs baits for a living. They did so well fishing that we started calling her Super Woman,”
The Best Boat prize for the guy’s day went to Oh Suzanna, with Capt. Mike Fuller at the helm. Anglers Mike Masters, Hiram Maldonado, Louis Cambra and Luis Gomez caught 4 fish that weighed 75.2 pounds.
