WE’RE OFF TO MIAMI (BOAT SHOW, THAT IS) – The 2010 edition of the Miami International Boat Show will unfold starting Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Miami Beach Convention Center.   The show runs through  Monday, Feb. 15.  Errol Flynn Marina will again be exhibiting in Booth 1968.  Boat shows offer our staff an excellent opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones.  It is also an excellent opportunity for us to spread the word about what a great place Port Antonio is to visit.  Concurrent with the Miami show, there is also the Superyacht and Brokerage Show along Collins Avenue, also on Miami Beach.  The brokerage show has free admission.  There is also the Strictly Sail Show in Miami.  A ticket to the Miami Boat Show or the Strictly Sail event, admits the holder to the other show on the same day.  A large fleet of shuttle busses move masses of people among the three shows and to off site parking areas which are clearly designated when approaching Miami Beach.

HELPING HAITI –   Several yachts,  which have been assisting with relief efforts following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, have called at Errol Flynn Marina.  Some came strictly for replenishing stores and others to pick up medical personnel and supplies to take back to the stricken nation.  We are pleased to be able to assist in this very small way and urge all of our many friends to join in this very important relief effort however they can.  Some of our visitors had been concerned that our area of Jamaica would possibly be overwhelmed with boatloads of refugees from the earthquake devastation.  This has simply not happened as there is a substantial number of international patrol vessels turning refugees back or diverting them to designated refugee processing areas such as Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba and other locations.

SLEEP WELL IN APRIL… One-hundred, fifty members of the Bermuda Regiment will be visiting Port Antonio from  April 24 to May 2 and will be encamping at the Jamaica Defense Force training area on Titchfield Hill just above Errol Flynn Marina. The regiment will be conducting various training exercises in the Portland Parish area  and their visit will include a review by the Governor General of Bermuda. The Bermuda soldiers were also hosted in Port Antonio in 2008.

NEW WATER CONTROL SYSTEM INSTALLED –  We are pleased to announce that all new state of the art water meters and water access controls have been installed at all water hydrants on our docks.  This system replaces a considerable number of old style  meters (including some with leaky connections) that left a lot to be desired.

COMING IN JUNE: “ERROL FLYNN WEEK” –  Initial plans call for Port Antonio’s first Errol Flynn Week  to be held June 19-26, 2010.  The 2010 event follows a very successful Errol Flynn centennial Ball  in October 2009 at Errol Flynn Marina’s cruise ship pier. It now appears that the week will open Saturday, June 19, with a 2010 version of Jazz on the Pier which also premiered in 2009.  During the following week, six of the more noted Errol Flynn films will be showcased at the marina.  Negotiations are underway to secure a pirate ship from the Cayman Islands to offer proper Errol Flynn Swashbuckling Cruises each night during the week.  Plans will also include a bamboo rafting race on the Rio Grande River.  The rafting races were a popular event during Flynn’s residence in Port Antonio more than 50 years ago.  As in 2009, the event will be for the sole purpose of benefiting a charitable organization in the community.

“JAMAICA LIGHTNING BOLT” DUE IN MAY –   For the third time since 2006, the ten yacht  flotilla of the Round the World Clipper Race will spend three to four days at Errol Flynn Marina in mid-May.  The precise arrival date (likely about May 15) is still uncertain as it is contingent on the progress of the race across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal prior to reaching Jamaica. The Jamaica “Lightning Bolt” entry will be greeted by our very own “World’s Fastest Man”, Usain Bolt.   From Jamaica, the race will head for New York and then to its final destination in the UK. As there will be a major crew change on the yachts, a large contingent of well wishers and family of both arriving and departing crew members are expected in addition to a substantial number of international press representatives.  During their visit, a large awards dinner party will be hosted on the Errol Flynn Marina cruise ship pier by the Jamaica Tourist Board in association with the Errol Flynn Marina and the Port Authority of Jamaica

FRENCH COMING AGAIN? OUI, OUI!  We must be doing something right.  The French will be returning again  April  17-19 as part of the annual Trans Caraibes Rally, which will include 10 to 15 yachts from the French Department Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. Jamaica was added to the  rally venue in 2009 and is being included this year  by popular demand from last year’s participants.  The rally includes stops in the Eastern Caribbean, Dominican Republic, and concludes in Cuba.  Several rally participants are also expected to include Jamaica on their return itinerary.

NEW BISTRO, BAR OPENING –  We are pleased to announce  the  recent opening of “Marybelle’s Pub on the Pier” located by the marina swimming pool.  The bar is open every day.  Expected to be open on or about Valentine’s Day Feb. 14,  is the “Rusalka” Restaurant, which is located upstairs in the marina administration building.  The restaurant will feature a moderately priced menu featuring international and Jamaican dishes.   “Rusalka” which means “mermaid” in the Russian language, will also  be open every day.   These two openings join with our acclaimed Norma’s Beach Bar and Grille plus Scoops Ice Cream Shoppe, who have been long established at the marina.  We welcome these new members of the marina team and wish them the best of success in their new ventures.

HOW ABOUT A LITTLE CULTURE!?-  Check out the Caribbean art exhibit around the pool bar every Sunday afternoon. Featured are both Jamaican and selected artists from other islands. The exhibit is free.

IT’S NOT JUST ANOTHER GIFT SHOP!  If you travel a lot, you’ve probably experienced that a lot of the tourist gift shops pretty much just look the same with the usual collection of t-shirts, postcards, etc.?  The next time you’re at the marina, check out “Things Jamaican” for a totally different shopping experience.  You won’t find so-called souvenir stuff that was made in some other country.  Everything they sell is Genuine Jamaican…no exceptions!  We must say our hats are off to their buyers who do a superb job of continuously locating distinctive hand -made Jamaican products of high quality.  Also, their inventory is every changing as new items become available.  You’ll find a lot of items you’ll be proud to display in your home or office or also use as a gift..  “Things Jamaican” is one of our anchor stores and is located  on the ground floor of the marina administration building.
