GREETINGS OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON – Once again another year has almost passed and it is a time to reflect on the many joys of 2009. Most important: the numerous new friends we met and got to know during their visit to our marina and Port Antonio. We like to think especially of those of you who initially told us you were just passing through and then stayed on for a few months! It was a year when we saw budgets cut to the bare bone and wondered if we would last to Dec. 31. Like everyone elsewhere, we had to retrench some too, but it made us really value every customer that passed our way. To all our many friends new and old, our sincere best wishes for a Happy and Joyous Holiday Season from our entire staff.

‘FLYNN IN AGAIN IN 2010! – As a follow up to the resounding success of the Errol Flynn Centennial Ball Nov. 14, the planning committee has decided to make it an annual event and expand the celebration to a full week. To avoid conflicts with other events in the fall, Errol Flynn Days will be held June 20-26, 2010, at a variety of venues in the Port Antonio Area. The week is expected to kick off with a “Jazz on the Pier” evening June 20, followed by a week-long Errol Flynn Flim Festival (Yes, “Flim”; to give it a bit of West Indian flavor). The week is expected to include a public concert at the Folly Cricket Oval, rafting races on the Rio Grande, look-alike contests for men and women picking roles from a Flynn movie, swashbuckling cruises on a pirate ship plus a semi-formal ball to cap off the week.

“HURRICANE SEASON? WHAT HURRICANE SEASON? – To say that the Caribbean was blessed this year with virtually no significant hurricane activity is putting it mildly. To survive any year unscathed by some sort of tropical storm activity is being ultra lucky. However, this writer has learned the hard way that while Nov. 30 is officially the final day of the Official Hurricane Season, these storms can also come up well outside of the official season and occasionally occur well in January.

POOL BAR, RESTAURANT, SOON COME – We’re not sure of the exact dates, but both the pool bar and marina restaurant are expected to be open for business before year’s end.
The pool bar, to be known as “Marybelle’s Pub on the Pier” will be open seven days a week from approximately 11 a.m. until midnight. Management tells us they will be offering “pub fare with a flair”, including tasty pub snacks, etc. The restaurant will be known as the “Rusalka” which is the Russian word for mermaid or sea nymph. A giant “Rusalka” made with copper on a background of driftwood, will be on display at the restaurant which will also be open seven days a week. The restaurant will be offering a wide selection of international and Jamaican cuisine. Both operations will go through a period of outfitting prior to opening for business. The pool bar promises to offer the “coldest beer in the Caribbean!” In addition, there will be several wide-screen monitors offering popular sports events and video music. Free wifi will also be available to pool bar customers.

PLANNING A WEDDING, PARTY? – Errol Flynn Marina is becoming a popular spot for party events and company functions, weddings, service club meetings and seminars. There is probably not a more scenic place for conducting such events and to top it off, there is plenty of parking, superb security and unmatched ambience. For rates and to schedule a date for your event, contact Christine Downer, events coordinator at 876-715-6044 or cdowner@portjam.com A variety of facilities are available for rent including the beach, picnic area, Ken Wright Pier, Terminal Building and the Promenade which is suitable for various outdoor expos, etc. A one month lead time is required to process and get approvals for events and to avoid conflicts with other users of the facilities. We also might note that catering services are presently offered by Norma’s at the Marina and will also be available through the new Rusalka restaurant.

SECURITY OFFICER CERTIFIED – Dockmaster George Munro has been certified as our Port Facility Security Officer as required under current ISPS (International Ship and Port Security) standards. In addition to operating the marina, our staff also controls all operations at the adjacent Ken Wright Cruise Terminal which must adhere to current ISPS standards to remain certified.

AND A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: Mrs. Pat Flynn, wife of our marina’s namesake, the late Errol Flynn, will be marking 83 years on Thursday, Dec. 17. Actually known professionally as Patrice Wymore, Mrs. Flynn had a substantial movie career of her own.
