Stability, roominess and equal cabin accommodations have made catamarans a hot commodity in today’s crewed charter market.

Owners and crews capitalizing on this catamaran trend can boost their weeks of charter even more by basing their yachts in the RIGHT location.

Island Global Yachting’s (IGY) American Yacht Harbor (AYH), located in Red Hook, St. Thomas, is the closest U.S. marina to the gorgeous cruising grounds in the British Virgin Islands as well as a short sail away from the awesome anchorages in the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John.

Lee Hicks, marina general manager, explains, “We have a total of 135 slips. Of these, 10 slips are ideal for catamarans and 4 are right on the main channel. Slip sizes vary, but we can accommodate catamarans up to 110-feet LOA. The most expensive slip is only $3.30 per foot per day, even during the height of the popular winter season, which is a great value for an IGY marina. Planning ahead and booking a slip early is key.”

It’s not a new secret that IGY’s AYH is a perfect charter yacht base. Island Yachts, which offers bareboat and crewed charters plus sales on over 30 Island Packet yachts has been based here since the 1970s. More recently, the Moorings, which was founded in Tortola, bases three of its vessels here. There are many other owner/operators of charter yachts that call IGY’s AYH home.

It’s easy to find everything you need at IGY’s American Yacht Harbor marina and nearby to set up and run a charter business. For example, Charter House is located right on the docks. This yacht clearinghouse and management company is run by seasoned industry professionals and provide a full range of support services. These include office support, yacht marketing, provision assistance, crew training and crew placement.

Beyond this, IGY’s AYH offers an on-site business center with mail, phone, fax and complementary Wi-Fi. There’s also a convenient fuel dock and in-slip fueling available, as well as used oil disposal and mobile pump-out service available for sewage disposal. A laundry is located on property too.

We have access to all mechanics,” says Hicks. “From rigging and solar to batteries and bilges and electronics repair, all the professionals will come to your vessel.”

Red Hook is a Fantastic Charter Base

IGY’s American Yacht Harbor is located in Red Hook, the easternmost settlement on St. Thomas. Essential on-shore services are steps away from the docks. These include a mail center, banks, ATM machines, pharmacy, marine chandlery, tackle store, medical services, taxis, full-service dive shop, a captain’s school and convenience store. For fun, there’s nearly a dozen restaurants – everything from take-out ribs, tacos and pizza to sit-down Irish, Seafood, Mexican and Asian cuisine – bars (some with live music) and shops (think clothes, jewelry and souvenirs).

Five minutes east by car or taxi are even more services. There’s a hardware store; full-service grocery with fresh produce, on-site butcher, bakery, deli and liquor section; boatyard; condos; resort hotels including the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas; fantastic swimming beaches; and water sports centers that rent equipment and/or teach paddle boarding, kite-boarding and windsurfing.

Travel Access to St Thomas USVI is Easy!

Finally, IGY’s American Yacht Harbor is only a 30-minute cab ride from the Cyril E. King Airport. There’s inter-island service to many Caribbean islands. Several direct flights depart daily to major hubs in the U.S. such as Miami, New York-JFK, Washington-Dulles, Atlanta and Boston.

There’s certainly many more reasons than cats have lives to base a charter catamaran at IGY’s AYH.
