Blue marlin are the king of blue water, but tarpon reign
supreme in green water – especially in the waters off Trinidad, says Dan Jacobs

Bash, set for August 25 to 28.
Tarpon have always
swum in Trinidad’s waters. “Since they are not a food fish and basically
considered a by-catch or nuisance fish, they have had limited commercial value.
For sport fishermen though, the tarpon is one of the most sought after fish and
provides a fishing experience second to none,” says Jacobs.
He backs up his
statement by personal experience. “A couple of my good friends, Ian “Wabba”
Milne and Peter Del La Rosa showed me the tarpon grounds in 1997. On our first
drift through the Boca we hooked up eight tarpon. Since this first
trip we have fished for tarpon every season, produced numerous
TV shows, magazine articles and have always caught tarpon.”
80 to 100 anglers
from the Caribbean, U.S. and Europe are expected to compete in the Trinidad
Tarpon Bash.
“This tournament
is all about experiencing the tarpon fishery in Trinidad in a fun-filled,
relaxed environment,” Jacobs says. “We have great boats available for those
that need to charter and excellent marina facilities if sports fishermen want
to bring their own boats. For those traveling alone we can hook you up
with other anglers. The tournament has categories for junior anglers, lady
anglers and fly anglers. In addition to the prizes and parties we will
also have cash awards.”
Tournament
festivities will take place out of Crews Inn & Marina, Chaguaramas,
Trinidad. Fishing is split into two segments each day, 5:45 a.m. until 10 a.m.
and again from 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. The three-day tournament concludes with
an evening Awards Ceremony.
