The 2005 CYS Boat Show, held Nov. 3 -
6, was better than ever this year with some 62 yachts visiting Village Cay
Marina showing their wares to 90+ International Yacht Brokers. Dock master Paul
Carrel does an excellent job as each year the boats become more gorgeous with
more toys and lots of new amenities. Speaking of luxury, some of the finest
yachts in the western hemisphere were represented here with
S/V SABORE, a new Privilege 585
catamaran represented by Catamaran Services and based in Tortola,
winning the Best of Show.
Thursday evening featured a CYS
Annual General Meeting at the Virgin Queen sponsored by Northern Lights through
Parts & Power with beverages by Road Town Wholesale. On Friday evening, a "Taste of the World" gala
buffet, featuring ethnic fare, was put on by the BVI Tourist Board and Village
Cay. On Saturday evening, Governor Macan hosted a
reception at Government house where the Mocko Jumbies entertained and the culinary winners were
announced. This was sponsored by Colombian Emeralds. The show closed on Sunday
night with a festive party, sponsored by CCT Boatphone,
at the Last Resort on Bellamy Cay where the Best of Show Awards were presented.
I enjoyed visiting CharterPort BVI’s gorgeous Leopard 4500 catamaran,
TWO IF BY SEA (TIBS), as I had watched
her diligent crew, Stuart and Fran Rattle, work on getting this yacht ready for
four months, prior to the show in Nanny Cay Boat Yard. I was fairly familiar
with this yacht as I had interviewed the makers of Leopard Yachts when the
boats first arrived at the Moorings since 1997. Throughout the summer, I saw
Stuart and Fran putting in hundreds of hours in the hot sun getting
TIBS ready for the season. Because of
this, I took the opportunity to meet the enthusiastic duo on board during the
show and was most impressed with the results.
Fran and Stuart are both certified PADI dive instructors who have
outfitted TIBS with full sets of dive
gear including a compressor. Stuart, originally from
England, is a certified Yachtmaster. Having sailed the world, doing numerous
trans-Atlantic and Pacific crossings, Stuart does all of the maintenance,
repair, electrical work – in fact everything – on this yacht
himself. His excellence shows everywhere you look and I must say that this
vessel looked better than new. Combined with Fran’s bright color scheme, fresh flowers and beautifully set table, the
effect is one of pure magic. The two maintain a home in Queensland,
Australia,
when not working, but from what I saw they must rarely visit it. Hats off to
this couple, and to all of the other 61 crews, for the hard work they have put
in to make this show a success. And lucky are the booked charters on TIBS
for they are sure to have a splendid time.
Thanks also go out to Doyle Sail Makers & Golden Hind Chandlery who
gave large red notebooks to each broker. Janet Oliver does a great job each
year preparing for this show as the Charter Yacht Society’s secretary.
And we, living in the BVI, can be proud of being home to a society that has
been serving
the BVI since 1982 with a fleet of the finest crewed charter yachts
in the Caribbean.
