If May is the month when things start to cool down in St Maarten, a welcome innovation from the team at Captain Oliver’s will at least make sure the season goes out with a bang.
The inaugural Captain Oliver’s Carib Beer Regatta, to be held May 14/15, is the creation of the newly formed Captain Oliver’s Yacht Club and will include competition in Cruising, Racing, Multi-hull and ‘Cool’ Classes. While the former classes will use the CSA or St Maarten Multihull rating systems, the ‘Cool’ Class will use the mysterious ‘Oyster Pond Rum Rule’.
Dubbed ‘The Renegade Regatta’, the event will incorporate Windward/Leeward Racing off Crystal Mountain for the Racing Class and around the Oyster Pond area for the Cruising and Multi-hulls. At the same time, organizers are hoping to put on an Oyster Pond festival with dockside entertainment, live music, cocktails and food for spectators.
Registration for the Regatta will be on Friday 13th at Captain Oliver’s Yacht Club, followed by a cocktail party. On Saturday, a buffet meal will follow the on-the-water activity and after racing wraps up at 3pm on Sunday, fun activities like beer barrel racing, kayak races and similar tomfoolery will take over. Free dockage is provided for racing boats and hotel rooms will be available at discounted rates for off-island sailors. The entry fee is $2 per foot with a $50 refundable number deposit also a requirement for some boats. For more details call Mary on (599) 557 1990
