BVI CHIEF MINISTER, DR. ORLANDO SMITH, AND BVI GOVERNOR DAVID PEAREY, SHARE ISLAND SLOOP SHOOT-OUT TROPHY

Each year, at Festival time in the our islands, the BVI Chief Minister and Governor take their sailing teams to the water and perform a round robin sailing fest on the Island Sloops that are part of the BVI heritage. Good friend and organizer Geoffrey Brooks, from the H. Lavity Stoutt Jr. College, said this year’s race was another success in promoting the territory’s maritime heritage. Geoff tells All At Sea that the race featured the BVI’s two traditional island sloops, Moonbeam and Youth Instructor, and explained that since the boats are of different sizes, there were two races with the crews exchanging boats after the first race.

“The race saw stiff competition on the part of both crews but the winds favoured Moonbeam this year—the winner of both races, and the captains ended up in a tie “in what has been termed a politically correct result. Because of this, the Chief Minister and the Governor agreed to share the trophy. The Chief Minister will keep the trophy for six months and Governor Pearey the following six months,” Brooks said.

The Chief Minister’s crew was comprised of Honorable Dr. D. Orlando Smith (Captain), Elvet Meyers, Dwayne Smith, and Reon Bowens. The Governor’s crew consisted of Governor David Pearey (Captain), John Shirley, Valentine Hodge, and George Maduro. This year’s losing sloop, Youth Instructor, was the winner of the two races in the 2004 event. The third annual Festival Sloop Shootout was sponsored by the Centre for Applied Marine Studies at the HLSCC in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Powerboat Association and the West End Yacht Club.

XTREME BILLFISHING RELEASE LEAGE COMES TO NANNY CAY MARINA

It was really fun to see the mucho expensive and decked out sport fishing boats that gathered at Nanny Cay Marina for the very popular Billfishing Xtreme Release League recently. This is one of the world’s largest events that is heavy on the cash. With over $600,000 dollars at stake and fish that can range from 50 lbs. to over 1000 lbs., all released, the excitement is only matched by the drama—lots of which we saw in the BVI. Because our islands are only one portion of the event, the winner’s names had not yet been released as there are other venues before the finale.
