PAUL CAYARD IS TO SKIPPER THE BLACK PEARL
IN BRUCKHEIMER’S “PIRATES OF THE
CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST”

Being a writer does have its advantages –I do get to
meet the most interesting people. Back in the 1990s, I covered one of the
Annual Pro-Am Regattas at the Bitter End Yacht Club at North Sound, Virgin
Gorda. Paul Cayard was there and I had the pleasure
of interviewing him. He is really a likeable guy, as well as being one of the
best skippers on the planet. Now he is set to return to one of the toughest and
most grueling competitions in the world of sailing – the Volvo Ocean Race, the
round-the-world race, which he won as the first
US skipper in history in 1997-98.
His entry comes as an agreement between The Walt Disney Company and Volvo Ocean
Race supporting the July 2006 release of Pirates
of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
I
look forward to seeing Paul on the screen along with Johnny Depp
who will once again play Captain Jack Sparrow. Put this one down on your
“To Do List” for next summer.

UPDATE ON THE
HLSCC MARINE CENTER

When the Queen’s Baton arrived at the Center for
Applied Marine Studies at the HLSCC, guests were escorted by Yvonne Crabbe
(Senior Administration Assistant at the HLSCC) and taken on a tour of the newly
constructed Mangrove Boardwalk and Center for Applied Marine Studies by Marine
Staff Member Geoffrey Brooks, where they were introduced to some of the hidden
secrets and ecological magic of the Mangrove swamp located in Paraquita Bay. They toured the Maritime
Museum where Geoff talked about
Tortola Sloops and viewed photographs, displays of traditional boat building
and an actual 20 ft Seine Boat built by West End
fisherman Owen Smith over 40 years ago and a part of the Museum’s
permanent collection. All were given an information package of the Marine
Studies Program and some photos and pamphlets about our Maritime Heritage here
in the BVI. This is certainly great publicity for our center.

APPRENTICE CRUISE COMING TO TORTOLA

Sunsail, now the world’s largest chartering company
with a large facility in Maya Cove, has officially signed on to become a
sponsor of the Apprentice Legend Cruise – an eight -night cruise from New
York City to the Caribbean featuring several former cast members of the hit
television show “The Apprentice.” Travelers will sail on Carnival
Cruise Lines’ Trump World Legend Ship making stops throughout the
Caribbean – including Tortola where they
will take part, with several former cast members, in a series of
“Apprentice-type” activities and events. They will also take the
winning team and several Apprentice cast members in a day sail around the BVI.
“We are excited about working with Expedia and the cast members of
“The Apprentice,” said Peter Cook, general manager of Sunsail
USA.

LONG-TIME FRIEND OF
THE BVI, PETER JENNINGS, DIES IN THE
U.S.

Most sailors living on Tortola
have seen Peter Jennings on our island at some time or other. My first glimpse
of him was walking the beach at Long
Bay, West End. Then
we happened to be dining at the Jolly Roger, earlier in the year, when
Jennings and his family
came in for dinner. So it is with much sadness that the BVI received news of
his recent death from complications of lung cancer. As a long-time ABC news
anchor, Jennings
was a frequent visitor to the territory and was involved in conservation
efforts here, being an active member of the BVI Parks & Trust Committee.
J.C. Pierce, President of the Trustees of the BVI National Parks, USA, recalls
Peter’s interest in the BVI, “Peter was enthusiastic in his support
of the BVI national parks, and an enthusiastic Trustee of our group. And he was
very proud of his relationship with the BVI. Two years ago, when Lawrence
Rockefeller was made a Belonger, he broke away from
his news duties to be the master of ceremonies of the entire Belonger ceremony. His death leaves a hole in a lot of
people,”
