West Marine Presents Bitter End's Women on the Water Week 2006

For the past eight years, famous women sailing pros have met and held the annual Women on the Water Sailing Week where participants take lessons from some of the world’s top sailors.

This year’s event was led by West Marine’s Pam Wall, a regular visitor to Bitter End, and five-time instructor. Best known for her ‘round-the-world cruising adventures, Pam is often seen at boat shows advising people on where and how to cruise offshore. Her slide presentations are excellent. The pro women sailors organize and run the activities with a great “one on one” approach. Each day starts with a fitness program that can be done ashore or afloat, and is followed by a short lecture or “chalk-talk.” Water sports director Gordon Over was most pleased with this year’s clinic.

“It was another fun filled week of sailing at Bitter End featuring the 8th annual Women on the Water Sailing Week. World Cruiser Pam Wall, US Sailing President Janet Baxter and Team One Newport principle Martha Parker took a group of 12 women through a variety of clinics, sailing adventures and one on one instruction. Special events included a small engine seminar presented by Eric Klockars of Soundings Magazine; a “How To” GPS session presented by Bitter End’s John Glynn; a special daysail aboard the visiting 48 foot Leopard Catamaran Jet Stream, and a special slide show of Pam Wall’s sail around the globe with her husband and two young children.

Of course, there was plenty of classroom instruction covering the finer points of boat handling and sail trim. The goal was to give the ladies confidence in their own sailing abilities. Based on the results demonstrated at the end of the week, it was a huge success. Bitter End looks forward to hosting another Women on the Water Program next year.
