When the 11th annual St. Barth Bucket sets sail on Friday, March 31, 2006, race organizers expect a full fleet of 30 sailboats, all over 100' in length. The winner of the 2005 Bucket, Freedom of Flight, a 125' Perini Navi ketch owned by Samuel T. Byrne of Boston, MA, will be back to test its mettle against such champions as Visione, a 147'Baltic from Germany, who currently holds the around the island speed record of 1 hour, 32 minutes and seven seconds. Other magnificent sailboats expected for the race include Ranger, Ghost, Rebecca, Zingaro, Sapphire, and the classic J-Class America's Cup entry, Endeavor. The skippers' and owners' briefing will be held on Thursday, March 30, with three days of racing, Friday through Sunday, March 31, April 1 &2, with the awards ceremony at the end of the race on Sunday.
"We have a waiting list at the moment," says Melanie Smith, who handles inscriptions for the race. "But some of the boats are still in the yard, or have to dash across the Atlantic."
