Fond Farewell at St. Lucia Yacht Club

Since 1984, Dr. Michael Camps has imparted his encyclopedic sailing knowledge to more than 300 young people, many of whom presented the good doctor with a book of poems, drawings and essays in appreciation upon his retirement recently. Dr Camps is returning to Trinidad to spend time with his six grandchildren and expects to carry on teaching and sailing. The doctor will be missed by everyone involved in St. Lucia’s sailing community.

Trinidad & Tobago Sailing Association schedules 6th Annual Cancer Benefit Regatta in April

Sailors and friends are invited to the Trinidad & Tobago Sailing Association’s grounds in Hart’s Cut, Chaguaramas for races on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9. A Silent Art Auction will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Chairman Calder Hart reports that this event, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, has generated over TT $1M aiding in the fight against cancer since its start in 2000.  From the 2004 regatta, the Trinidad & Tobago Cancer Society received state-of-the-art equipment for detection and treatment of cervical cancer, and in 2005 a Mobile Mammography Unit. This year’s goal is to provide a High Resolution Ultrasound unit, in the value of TT$ 750,000.

Around Antigua in January

The Antigua Yacht Club welcomes sailors and crew to the annual Round the Island Race the weekend of January 21-22. Thirty or more yachts will sail from Falmouth Harbour anticlockwise (counterclockwise to non-Brits) to Jolly Harbour, then complete the race the second day. The infamous “Ms. Round the Island” competition will be held Saturday night.

Grenada’s Back

Following the passage of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004, the Grenada Yacht Club has been busily reconstructing and refurbishing, and now reports that all services—water, electricity, fuel, internet, laundry, and bar—are in full operation. For the upcoming cruising season, the club is offering a “two nights dockage—get one free” special, along with a welcoming Grenadian drink. “Management and staff would be delighted if you would drop in and visit our facilities and experience the Club’s Grenadian hospitality,” says Manager Marilyn Steele-McKenzie.

Sailors circle St. Croix

On November 12 and 13, Llewellyn Westerman’s multi-hull Charis led the pack east as eight boats braved blustery winds for the St. Croix Yacht Club’s annual Around the Island Race. At the halfway mark Saturday night, boaters slept aboard, anchored off the beach after a lively evening at the Sunset Grill. “The lush hills of Frederiksted provided an almost Jurassic Park-like setting for the boats anchored out,” reported Fleet Captain Chris Schreiber. Several sailors turned back the next morning after one dismasting, leaving Charis to prevail at 11:45 a.m. Sunday with a total elapsed circumnavigation time of six hours and 33 minutes.
