The Antigua & Barbuda Sport Fishing Association held their second annual “Best in the West” fishing tournament on November 12th in Jolly Harbour. Based out of “Docs Dock” (Dr. Nick Fuller’s waterside villa), eighteen entrants of all ages headed out to sea for a long, sunny day of fun and fishing. And boy, the fishing was good! Every entrant landed a fish, contributing to the competition total of 1443 pounds!
The coveted Spike Trophy was to be awarded to the Champion Boat and the competition this year was fierce. Dough Holloway from Miss Fish brought in the largest Wahoo, winning that prize as well as the Men’s Division trophy, for a Wahoo weighing in at 66 pounds. Largest Tuna was won by Bridgette Van Dongen on Nichole, with a total weight of 13.2 lbs. Jason Thomas (also crewing on Miss Fish) won the Youth Division with a 38 ½ pound catch and Caroline Edwards from Megalops took the Ladies prize for her 33 pound catch.
It was the only foreign entry, Bruce B, from Montserrat, that won the historic and uniquely Antiguan Spike Trophy. They caught eight Wahoo that totaled 199.7 pounds. The three-man team joined the other crews and spectators as Minister of Sport, The Honorable John Maginley and Yachting Consultant to The Ministry of Tourism; Nigel Benjamin presented prizes to the winners.
