Thirty-seven junior sailors from Puerto Rico, Tortola, the Netherland Antilles, and the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas took to the waters off Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, for the 5th Youth International Popular Securities, Inc. Regatta. Sailed the weekend of November 11-13, there were 25 sailors competing in the Red, White and Blue advanced fleets and 12 in the beginner Green fleets. Seven laser sailors also raced.
Clear skies with winds 8 to 12 knots out of the east spelled conditions for the first two days, however shifty winds set the scene for the last day’s competition.
After completing a total of 11 races, Puerto Rico’s Ivan Aponte dominated the Optimist event, followed by a well-deserved second place by Fernando Monllor, Jr. Aponte and Monllor dueled most of the time. Jose Joaquin Nigaglioni placed third.
