St. Croix Yacht Club Launches CORT Regatta Series

This month, the St. Croix Yacht Club brings back the CORT series with its 13th Annual International Regatta on February 18 – 20, 2006. Look for familiar faces at this U.S. Presidents’ Day holiday weekend boutique race that promises and delivers an early spring tune-up and a lot of fun.

“Henry Menin is confirmed as Chair of the international judges and Bob Phillips is confirmed as the Primary Race Official,” says Regatta Director Julie San Martin, who is looking for increased IC-24 participation this year.

“We’re planning a separate course for the IC-24s inside the reef so they can race large numbers of short windward-leeward races,” says San Martin, who has lined up Innovative Communication Corporation as a major sponsor. The Notice of Race is posted with registration forms online:  www.stcroixyc.com or call (340) 773-9531.

A St. Croix tradition is the not-to-be-missed Cruzan Rum Welcome Party on Friday, February 17 at 6 p.m., with plentiful food and the rocking Xpress Band for dancing.

A separate Valentine Optimist Regatta for kids under age 16 is expected to attract more than 20 junior sailors from the region again in its 3rd year.

CORT, the Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle series, was last held in 2003, and now returns with St. Croix, the Culebra Heineken International Regatta March 17 – 19 and the BVI Spring Regatta March 31 – April 2.

“We’re hoping to get at least five in each category that will do the whole series,” says Culebra’s Angel Ayala, whose island’s IC-24 fleet will be out in force along with big boats and cats. Sailors joining the three-race CORT series pay an entry fee of $50 (in addition to fees charged for the individual races) during registration for the St. Croix regatta.
