In order to raise awareness for ‘Women Against Violence Everywhere’ (WAVE), Synergy will be racing the 100th anniversary Newport-Bermuda Race in June, 2006 with a crew of Caribbean-based women sailing under the organisation’s banner.
Synergy, a Frers 49, was famously rescued and refitted by Carl Vaughan after Hurricane Lenny in 1999, winning a batch of top regattas, before being sold back to Lea de Hass.
The crew will be made up of top female offshore sailors including Haas, Cariblantic.com’s Annie Westcott, Husky Salvage and Towing’s Becky Paull, The Workbench’s Julie Swartz, Willy T’s Marina Stucchi, Kate Lee and Sierra Lowell, Jane Cheesman and Val Doan.
The plan is to raise money through sponsorship for getting the boat race-ready and to promote WAVE as an essential cause.
WAVE will campaign for changes in legislation to protect women against violence. A website will be up and running shortly.
