The weekend before Thanksgiving, Puerto Rican sailors met once again to race around Fajardo on the second edition of the Bob Fisher Cup. The regatta was hosted by the Club Nautico de Fajardo and held in Isleta Marina.

The Bob Fisher Cup was started in 2006 to honor a well known architect and sailor who has devoted most of his life to promoting sailboat racing in Puerto Rico. This year, activities started with late registration and music on Friday, November 16 followed by a skipper’s meeting on Saturday morning, racing, a great dinner and performances by 3 live bands!

Tropical Steel Band played calypso, Vieques Combo put everyone to dance with their contagious Latin music, and La Guerilla played some awesome Rock in both English and Spanish. They closed the night with a great rendition of the classic Eagles song, “Hotel California.”  Even Capt. Tony joined the band to sing and perform one of his all time favorite songs while sponsors’ representatives kept the Don Q rum, Corona Light beer and Cuervo tequila flowing.  People had such a great time that the party continued on the Isleta Marina ferry all the way back to Fajardo.

On Sunday sailors were treated to a light breakfast followed by more racing, and then food, more music with a local DJ, followed by raffles and awards.

Twenty two sailboats raced in four clases: Racing, Cruising, J-24, and “Nativos”. The Racing class raced under CSA ratings while the Cruising class raced under PHRF. J-24s and “Nativos” raced one design. There was only one race held on Saturday due to light winds, followed by two races on Sunday in medium winds. In what has become a Bob Fisher tradition, sailors had to sail upwind all the way to Bajo Blake or Bob Fisher’s mark.

Last year’s winner Jose Sánchez, from Balajú II, sailed with his crew aboard Pat Nolan’s J/33 Boomerang and took the Bob Fisher Cup home again. Club Nautico de Fajardo’s new management team did an excellent job both on and off the water.
