When the 11th annual St. Barth
Bucket sets sail on Friday, March 31, 2006, race organizers expect a full fleet
of 30 sailboats, all over 100′ in length. The winner of the 2005 Bucket,
Freedom of Flight, a 125′ Perini Navi ketch owned by
Samuel T. Byrne of Boston, MA, will be back to test its mettle against such
champions as Visione, a 147’Baltic from Germany, who currently holds the
around the island speed record of 1 hour, 32 minutes and seven seconds.
Other magnificent sailboats expected for the race include Ranger, Ghost,
Rebecca, Zingaro, Sapphire, and the classic
Cup entry, Endeavor. The skippers’ and owners’ briefing will be held on
Thursday, March 30, with three days of racing, Friday through Sunday, March 31,
April 1 &2, with the awards ceremony at the end of the race on Sunday.
"We have a waiting list at the moment," says
Melanie Smith, who handles inscriptions for the race. "But some of the
boats are still in the yard, or have to dash across the Atlantic."
Anyone with a sailboat over 100′ who might be interested in participating,
should contact Melanie at email@example.com
